![]() Graceful interplay drives the romantic sax-piano duet “Le Petit Opportun,” and Lovano’s golden tenor tone is especially moving on “One for Charlie,” a slow, sad solo in tribute to the late bassist Charlie Haden. Lovano’s minimalist meditations include the flowing and lyrical title cut, which almost finds a steady rhythm, and the chromatic “All Twelve,” framed by an angular, edgy melody. The result is a set of tunes that float, undulating and unhurried, creating a mood of reflection but also liberation. There is momentum to the music, however, as the trio pushes jazz forward, using silence as an instrument to build space between the players and what they play. ![]() Look elsewhere for swing, torrents of notes or chord changes. Lovano’s eight original compositions leave plenty of space for individual explorations by the sax man, drummer Carmen Castaldi and pianist Marilyn Crispell, even when they’re all playing at the same time. Now we are on the precipice of the third vacant seat getting filled and President Trump has just nominated a woman to fill that empty seat. “Our Daily Bread,” released Friday, is post-free jazz in a chamber setting, and absorbing despite the lack of a bass or beat. After a much-contested confirmation process, Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh filled the second vacant seat in October 2018. We were all very proud with the speed with which we crafted A Clear and Present Rager, with drums, guitar, and bass taking only one half-day. He has excellent preamps, and he is swift and cunning with his suggestions for excellency. I’ve always loved the classic jazz guys, I don’t have a favourite drummer per say but If I had to pick it would be one of the Joneses, Philly Joe or Elvin, Of course I also love Jack DeJohnette, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Billy Higgins, Billy Hart, Al Foster, Victor Lewis and on and on. Kimmy: Dave pushed hard, because he is a most supreme drummer. ![]() The latest album from saxophonist Joe Lovano’s Trio Tapestry has almost no pulse but plenty of heart and soul. There are so many, it’s hard to know where to begin. “Our Daily Bread,” Joe Lovano’s Trio Tapestry (ECM)
